A long time ago a lone shepherd was watching his sheep at the edge of a forest near Rome. Unexpectedly a lion, howling in pain, came up to the shepherd and put his head in the shepherds lap. He did this because he wanted him to get a thorn out. When the shepherd found and pulled out the thorn, the lion, which happily licked the shepherd, bounded off into the forest.
The next year the shepherd was falsely accused of stealing and put in a pit by Nero the Stupid. The shepherd shouted he was innocent but no one listened. The shepherd needed a miracle to save him, because the sentence was death by lions. The lion, which they were going to use, was mistreated and angry! The shepherd was thrown into the arena and when the lion was let in he charged at the shepherd.
Then the lion suddenly stopped. He recognized the shepherd! The lion put his head in the shepherd's lap and purred. Nero, who was surprised and annoyed at the scene before him, let the shepherd depart because if he didn't the shepherd would get the lion to attack him instead. As we witnessed, kindness pays.
